Winter Wheat Dominates Nebraska Panhandle Crop Income
Dryland farming drives the Nebraska panhandle economy with winter wheat making roughly half of crop income. In 1967 total crop value reached 67.5 million dollars, with winter wheat at 30 million from 840 thousand acres yielding 26 bushels per acre. Cheyenne County tops acreage with 196 thousand, followed by Kimball, Box Butte and Deuel. Pasture land nears 6 million acres, irrigation expands from 1,304 wells in 1960 to 1,730 in 1967, totaling 467 thousand irrigated acres or 15 percent of cropped land. Scotts Bluff leads in irrigated acreage with 188 thousand acres, about 86 percent of its cropped land. Price declines push farmers toward efficiency and diversified crops with fertilizer use to boost production.
