A. A. Fenske was elected County Commissioner for the First District. He previously served on the county board and is a former state senator, indicating return to public office after prior terms.
Sidney Public Schools face a shortfall as the Office of Education tentatively approves 37582 dollars for tuition payments under Public Law 874. Superintendent Russell Pedersen notes the district budgeted 75000 dollars for 1964 65, with enrollment declines from the Sioux Army Depot not fully known earlier. A 28186 dollar advance is expected within ten days, leaving the total entitlement far below needs. Pedersen will seek a later increase or additional funding to avoid underfunding the depot students.
Lady Bird and Johnson secure overwhelming support from the people, bolstering President Johnson’s political capital. The strong mandate is expected to ease governance over four years, widening Democratic margins in the Senate and House while showcasing his popularity against Goldwater.
Three oil discoveries and three field development wells marked a strong week in western Nebraska. Regal Drilling and Sun Oil struck No 1 Mossberg in Banner County, Fundamental Oil hit No 1 McKinnon in Kimball County, and Stuarco Oil along with E A Obering found No 1 Te brinke in Banner. In Scotts Bluff County Sun Oil found No 1 Carlson in Minatare Field, Buckley in Buckley Field yielded by Starco and Ak-Sar-Ben, and Sinclair completed No 4 Henderson in Stage Hill Field. It was one of the year's most productive periods.
More than 180 reservations have been made for the Chamber of Commerce fall dinner and Ladies Night on Tuesday November 10 at 6 30 p m in the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Chamber manager Jack Laimer says there is room for many more as the program features the new attendance trophy and a keynote by Laimer on Service Is The Rent We Pay. Tickets are 2 50 and reservations can be made by calling the Chamber office at 254 5851.
The Friday deadline November 6 marks the return cutoff for election ballots sent to all Chamber of Commerce members two weeks ago. Ballot return currently stands at 54 percent.
Cheyenne County adds a drilling site north of Potter. The No. 1 Erickson well in SW NW Sec 24 16 53 is a mile northeast of Leafdale Field and 1.25 miles west of Foreland Field, operated by Don M. Rounds Drilling Co. This brings four active or planned drilling locations in the county.
Wheatbelt Public Power District holds its annual meeting Saturday at the Sidney Youth Center. Raymond C. Stack of the Nebraska Wheatgrowers Association will give the afternoon address. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. A movie On the Line and slides by Charles Ham precede the 1 p.m. business session.
The Panhandle forecast calls for fair skies and rising temperatures tonight and Thursday. Lows near 30 tonight and highs reaching 60 to 70 on Thursday. The five day outlook shows normal temperatures overall, warmer early in the period and a turn to colder conditions toward week’s end.
In Cheyenne Wyoming State Treasurer Everett Copenhaver, father of Mrs. John Peetz Jr. of Sidney, was robbed of 27 dollars after convincing two masked men he could not open the Wyoming vault safe. They forced him to drive to the Capitol, bound him, and fled after cutting a telephone line.
The Buddy Poppy sale, sponsored by Porter McGuver Post 610 VFW and its Auxiliary, will be conducted in Cheyenne County this Friday and Saturday. Proceeds benefit disabled veterans who made the flowers.
In a heavy turnout Cheyenne County voters backed Republicans with George Fleming winning re election to the 47th District Senate while Sydney Finch captured the County Judge post over Guy Feff Bush. A. A. Fenske won the District 1 County Commissioner race defeating Muriel Crosby. The one tenth mill museum levy passed narrowly and many statewide races favored Republicans.
Nebraska results at noon Sidney time show Johnson 285 917 Goldwater 256 463 for President. Hruska 322 661 Arndt 204 968 for U S Senate. Morrison 325 529 Burney 216 664 for Governor. Solid Republican statehouse except governor lieutenant governor and treasurer. Amendments mostly approved with No 300 defeated in part. detailed counts follow for each amendment and office.
A 40 year old Lincoln man, Joe Schaf, was hired by the Sidney Board of Education to direct the Manpower Retraining Program at the Sioux Army Depot. He will hire instructors and organize the program, with a starting date to be set as instructor availability is confirmed. Schaf, a WWII veteran with a Nebraska education background, will relocate to Sidney, while a housing manager position remains to be filled.
Enumerators for the 1964 Census of Agriculture in Cheyenne County include Ronald Maas Leonard Deaver Janet Frans Robert McKay Beulah Anthony and Donna Fuehrer. Crew leader Charles E. Weir announced the 23 000 nationwide temporary workers will locate farms verify questionnaires and assist operators in providing accurate data. The census, conducted every five years in years ending in 4 and 9, collects farm size, crops, livestock, equipment, and production expenditures to guide decisions affecting the U.S. economy.
