Capture of Dull Knife and Cheyennes at Sand Hills
The report states seven U.S. Cavalry companies forced Dull Knife and 150 Cheyennes to surrender at the Sand Hills southeast of Camp Robinson on October 25. Chiefs Dull Knife and Old Crow led 41 men plus women and children into Major Carlton’s camp and were disarmed, with ponies and stocks seized. Survivors were held as prisoners of war at Hobinson barracks while debates over their fate and transport to reservations ensued.
