Rye Rye Rye Mixes Cut Wheat Quality Across Plains
Wheat losses from rye mixtures affect Kansas Nebraska Oklahoma and Texas with about two and a half percent yield reduction, totaling over 6 million bushels. Kansas City this season saw 1.6 million bushels mixed enough with rye to drop grades by one to two, costing roughly $30,000 in the market. Grain men say five percent rye lowers price by three to five cents per bushel, meaning a 3000 bushel crop could lose $100 to $150. Rye’s hardiness means winters can raise rye percentages, degrading wheat grade. A practical farm remedy is needed to eliminate rye from fields.
