Planned grazing system aids pasture development in Cheyenne County

Keith Sprenger and sons Jeff Greg and Randy improved their Cheyenne County rangeland with a five pasture planned grazing system. Each year one pasture rests during the growing season and then provides winter grazing, with a complete rest every five years. The system boosted taller grasses including little bluestem sidecats grama western wheatgrass and needle and thread. The family built five livestock wells and a mile of cross fence with cost sharing from the Great Plains Conservation Program. They plan a pipeline to add water and a more intensive system with four month rests followed by 12 month rests for new seedlings, with planning help from local extension agents and soil conservation services.
