Curb and gutter under way in fourth improvement area
City Engineer James Hazelwood says the first block of curb and gutter in the new paving project will be finished this week. The block between King and Linden on Tenth avenue is under construction with about 20 workers. Oiling will begin after the Farmers Union Oil driveway is done and progress will reach three yards per hour. Work continues south on Tenth avenue toward the Burlington right of way as Highway 19 is moved one block east to ninth avenue. Curbs and gutters for 13% blocks should be completed before oiling.

Detour as 40 foot Pumpkin Creek Bridge Burns Out
Motorists on highway 29 between Gering and Kimball faced a detour after a 40 foot wooden bridge over Pumpkin creek burned Sunday afternoon. Tragic Kimball Picnic Drowns Two Seventh Graders
A Kimball school picnic turned fatal as two 11 year old boys Kenneth Irwin and John Wichman drowned in the west Kimball reservoir while others fled to shore. The raft carrying four pupils broke apart about 500 feet from shore as rescuers including local doctors and volunteers searched the water.

Poppy Day Drive Opens in Sidney to Aid Disabled Doughboys
The annual Poppy Day observance in Sidney, tomorrow, will aid disabled veterans and families of the dead. Nearly 100,000 American Legion auxiliary women will distribute flowers and collect contributions nationwide, with Sidney’s unit led by Mrs. Alice Hamilton. Attorney General To Decide License Fight
The attorney general's office was asked for an official ruling to end the license cost dispute that could cost Sidney the Kenosha Auto Transport corporation. State Engineer Tilley said he asked the attorney general to determine the legal license cost for caravan cars. He noted the Washington and Douglas county dispute would be settled once the ruling is issued. The Kenosha company, headquartered in Sidney, may relocate to Kansas if Nebraska rates prove prohibitive.
