Murderer Reed Hanged After Sidneys Lynching Frenzy
The Sidney crowd captured and hanged Charles Reed, suspected killer of Hank Loomis, after Loomis died from a gunshot wound. Sheriff Zweifel and Hugh Bean captured Reed near Sidney jail, he was brought back and executed on a nerve-ridden night to a telegraph pole on Front Street amid shouts and a mass approval. Loomis died at the post hospital with amputation, while Mollie Wardner fled Sidney after financing Reed's doom. Funeral rites for Loomis were held with the largest Sidney crowd in memory.
