Sheriff W W Schulz gave May 5 tours of the courthouse jail and law enforcement offices to Padroni Colorado first graders led by Edna M Green. The visit prompted cheerful letters thanking the sheriff and recounting guns and handcuffs shown during the tour.
With two days left in the first period ending May 14, the Telegraph contest standings stay similar to Monday. Voters are urged to support candidates before the deadline as vote values drop afterward. Key names include Mrs. W. D. Smith of Sidney and Mrs. Elmer Phelps of Lodgepole among top totals. several others from Sidney, Gurley, Chappell and more trail. Some ineligible names omitted for not reporting recently, yet may earn commissions on prior sales.
A G Lon Miller aged 70 of Denver died this morning around 10 o clock at his home. He was a rural mail carrier in Lodgepole for about 30 years and was well known as a basketball and football referee. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Craig Mortuary.
The ASCS office invites bidders to view and bid on office items by 4 p.m. Friday. Items include a table folding chairs and filing cabinets.
Complaints filed with County Judge Sydney Finch name Kenneth Haws and James W. Wright for burglary at the Western Nebraska Express office in Sidney on February 4. A safe was stolen and taken out of town and broken open. Arrested in Westminster, Colorado, tools linked them to the burglary were found in their custody. They are serving time in the Canon City penitentiary and were on probation during the Sidney incident.
Sidney Chamber of Commerce outlined two upcoming promotions at a Retail Committee breakfast. Moonlight Madness is set for Tuesday May 25 with Bob Lewis of McDonald’s as general chair. Employee Days runs June 24 25 26 chaired by Bob Lloyd of Snyder’s and Fine’s.
Duane Brauer, 40, Marathon Oil Co. employee, was found dead late this morning at his farm home in the South Divide. He suffered a heart condition and had been ill for some time. His father Richard Brauer discovered him. funeral arrangements are under Gehrig and Son Funeral Home. Details will be in Friday's Telegraph.
Frank G Walker aged 52 died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital in Sidney after four and a half months of ill health. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Henry Monnich officiating. A Sidney resident 15 years, he hailed from Lance Creek Wyoming and worked for Marathon Oil. He was born March 15, 1913 in North Platte to Richard W. and Mrs. Walker and married Merna Brown on December 12, 1949 at Rushville. Survivors include his wife, son Gary of Sidney, his father in Rushville, a brother Robert in Rushville, and sister Gladys Hogue of Plevna, Montana. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
N. Tiemann, president of Wausa Commercial State Bank and head of the Nebraska Bankers Association, is the main speaker for the Western Nebraska United Chambers of Commerce May meeting in Hemingford. WMCC directors meet at 2:30 p.m. in the Utilities Building. A social hour at 5 p.m. in the Legion Memorial Building precedes a 6:30 p.m. dinner at the Methodist church.
Director Pearle Finigan will lead an aerial survey of drought stricken western Nebraska on Thursday visiting Broken Bow Alliance Scottsbluff Sidney and North Platte. The mission with ASCS leaders aims to gather county input for a speedy solution to the drought crisis affecting farms and ranches.
The Sidney Telegraph reports that a 1965 Cheyenne County Auto License Directory will begin production this weekend and be ready for sale by month’s end. It will list license numbers, owners, and car makes for all passenger cars in Cheyenne county and be sold in Lodgepole, Gurley, Dalton and Sidney with advertising spots available by calling the Telegraph before noon on Friday, May 14.
A Cheyenne County rural eighth grade class of 33 will graduate at 2 p.m. Friday in the Elks Auditorium. County Superintendent John W. Webb will present diplomas. The program lists multiple musical selections, readings, solos, and a square dance, culminating in the diploma presentations. The bulk of graduates come from District 166 Sioux Army Depot with many district and individual names noted.
Cheyenne County Fair Board approved a facelift for the fairgrounds dash painting six stucco buildings. Low bidder for the project was Al Koester, Half.
An Ak-Sar-Ben grant of $500 funds remodeling work and a watering system at the Fair grounds arena was discussed on Monday. The area is used year round and dust control has grown progressively worse, prompting the plan.
Chief Sol Willis warns dog owners that dogs must be tied or leashed day and night. The annual yard and garden nuisance season begins as curious dogs roam free. Officers will pursue owners if dogs are seen loose, with court appearances and fines likely.
Two damage lawsuits totaling 79 418.95 were filed in the District Court. George King sues Leonard and Mary Rieken for injuries from a June 15 1964 ladder collapse while King was employed at the Rieken farm seeking 75000 for total disability and 4418.95 for medical bills. Roy A Sperry of Logan County through Arnold Sperry sues Clarence H Hansen of Gregory County for 30533.10 after a April 3 1964 accident three miles north of Peetz when a tow truck failed to help a skidding 16 year old. The suit claims lost wages and medical care.
A Panhandle producer in Banner County measures Nos. 1 Singleton Estate SESE 31-17-53 with pipe being run. In Cheyenne County new sites include Elder No. 1 A in Stanley Field. Braden Geer and others move, while Strata Ladegar in Sidney field and Johnson No. 1 in Tallyho field see logging activity with Toltek Drilling as contractor.
At the May 17 1905 meeting the City Council weighed alternates for the new library. They approved replacing some nearby sidewalks, using Stramit insulation on the roof, and natural finish copper trim. They rejected three carpet and tile changes and approved aluminum window frames. Cost impact on quality determined each decision.
Sidney City Clerk Gordon Tobin received a letter from Nebraska Senator Fern Hubbard Orme supporting the city action on a roadside junkyard bill. The Sidney City Council drafted a resolution urging restrictions on expansion or new junkyards along roads to curb unsightly sites and protect natural beauty. Orme has introduced a state bill mirroring the effort to stop such junkyards from becoming public nuisances.
City Council approved rebuilding the road to Hillside Golf Course to improve sight lines and safety for pedestrians and drivers. The project flattens the near end hill and moves dirt to a low area to create a wider, more level road within highway grade limits. Contributions from property owners and Kansas Nebraska Gas Company help keep costs down.

Nebraska lawmakers and Gov were widely opposing a plan to remove railway mail service from Union Pacific trains serving Sidney and other communities. Sidney officials warned that cutting mail service often precedes passenger service curtailment as railroads lose income from the postal contract. A key meeting between Nebraska communities and the Postmaster General was being sought, with several weeks expected for a final decision. The notice also notes Mike Heaton, a St. Ann's High School teacher in Lexington, was chosen for a National Defense Education Act history institute opening June 14 at the University of Nebraska.
Edison Neal was found guilty of petit larceny for stealing $75 in property from Stickney's Inc. Judge Sydney Finch sentenced Neal to 60 days in jail and to pay the costs of the action.
