Power district funds 100 mile line from Sutherland to Sidney

Nebraska Public Power District plans a 100 mile 345000 volt transmission line from Sutherland to Sidney with start in 14 to 16 months. The project fits into about 300 miles of planned lines and involves multiple contracts with firms in Michigan, Texas, Pennsylvania and Colorado. The board approved engineering design work, pole structures, long distance conductor, earthwork and pipe supplies with completion targeted for 1981.

Record U.S. tax refunds reach high average in 1977

IRS data show taxpayers received a record average refund of 444.39 dollars amid 79 million processed returns by April 22. More extensions granted, and higher errors on 1976 short form 1040A blamed on 1976 Tax Reform Act. About 12 million returns mailed in final stretch.

Loyalty Day banquet speakers at VFW draw crowd

Jack Lowe and Tom Her boldsheimer spoke at the Loyalty Day banquet of the VFW, drawing 70 attendees. Details appeared in the Lifestyles section on page 3. Spelling Bee Upset as Sagacity Drops Competitors

Nancy Holling of Sidney and 11 others were eliminated in the written Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha over the word sagacity. Chris Ballew, 13, Council Bluffs, won the bee and an expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National Spelling Bee June 6-11. Runners-up and prizes included a 30-volume Encyclopaedia Britannica for Renee Masek and a $100 cash prize plus a watch for Ballew.

Sidney set for three public meetings Tuesday night

Three public meetings are planned in Sidney Tuesday. The school board meets at 7 15 p m in the Junior High Library to discuss board appointments a new calendar and select an architect from six interviewed. NRD directors may decide land purchase for Oliver Dam at 7 p m in Ft Sidney Motor Hotel. Parking meter committee meets at 7 p m in City Council Chambers to outline its direction with John Laing presiding.

Kimball Jaycees Win Long Kimball River Race

Dozens gathered along the North Platte near Bridgeport for the Kimball Jaycees annual boat race. Gaylen Catron and Ken Wigers of Bridgeport won canoes in 2 hours 6 minutes, with Alliance, Sidney, and other teams close behind as 28 canoes competed amid headwinds and a breached island channel.
