Local business in Sidney shows a slight late April dip but remains within normal range for most shops. Traders cite nationwide conditions, improved May outlook, and rising tourist traffic as signs of recovery. weather and farm prices influence turnover. Garage owners anticipate busier season with Lincoln Highway travel expected to boost local gains.
North Central Gas company starts building its line from Muskrat field Wyoming with river crossing at Glenrock and a 10 mile spur to Clayton to tie into Sinclair pipeline. Project team includes W A Houston J W Walker C H Daugherty R E Burke and Earl Burwell. Walker to relocate to Scottsbluff.
M. L. Sterling prominent farmer northeast of Sidney died at his home Wednesday morning after a lingering illness. He had lived in the county seven years, moving here from Wyoming. Funeral services set for Saturday at 9:30 at the Catholic church with Rev. Anton Linkill. burial in Sidney Greenwood Cemetery. Survived by wife, one daughter Mrs. Henry L. Johnson, and three sons J. A. Sterling, W. H. Sterling, and L. B. Sterling. Complete obituary to follow next issue.
The Kansas City Fed released a report noting generally improved conditions in the tenth district covering Nebraska. Construction contracts rose 87.7 percent from February to March, with residential building climbing 32.3 percent. Building for the first quarter fell versus other years while department store sales in March surpassed February but remained under typical seasonal levels. Loans at 56 banks slipped 3.7 percent in five weeks, with stock and bond secured lending down 6.3 percent. Grain prices showed little change.
County employee Thomas Hayes confessed to violently attacking Miss Irma Lehmkuhl in Sidney, Nebraska, after a pressure-filled cross examination. He offered a written and oral account blaming no clear motive, weeping as he described the Sunday sequence from his north hillside start to the attack and subsequent flight toward Denver.
Omaha goodwill boosters will spend the night in Sidney during a five day central and western Nebraska tour from May 25 to 29. The group of about 100 business guests aboard Pullman trains will deliver balloons and souvenirs, visit Kearney Scottsbluff Gering Chadron and other towns, with Sidney hosting events and a night stay at the city. A recent botulism case in Scottsbluff ended in the death of Mrs. Perigo, after serum was flown in from Denver, following the earlier death of Miss Lena Pfenning of Lyman from suspected botulism.
O D Lyon, former Sidney postmaster and part owner of The Telegraph, writes from Reedley California that reading his obituary was a rare amusement. He recalls early Sidney life, defends youthful political zeal, notes turning 70, and hopes for one last trip east, praising Sidney’s progress since 1885 to 1903 and mentioning his long residence with wife Mrs Lyon.
A conference on smut loss in wheat met in Sid ney on April 24 arranged by County Agent L. D. Willey. W. H. Gilbertson of the U S department of agriculture led the discussion with 15 county farmers, two elevator men, two bankers, Dr M A Haskell, H R Clark, H G Gould, P H Stewart, and F L Taylor contributing. A plan to reduce smut is in progress.
Over 60 Lions and Lionesses attended the Sidney Lions Club ladies night at the Union Pacific hotel. A J Jorgenson served as toastmaster. Impromptu speeches complemented a program by the Motet Singers F C Mills Newton Witters Archie Kirkpatrick Vern Livingston Julius W Cochran Eleanor Rose and Livingston. Fifty five attendees joined a postmeeting picture show.
Joel Wickard a Cheyenne county resident for 45 years died after a 14 month illness at a local hospital He was 66 Funeral services will be at the Christian church Rev Andrew Ramsey and Lloyd Wilson in charge Burial will be in the Gurley area five miles northeast of Gurley Gehrig Stone officiating He is survived by his wife one step daughter and ten children from a former marriage Scores of friends from Sidney and Cheyenne county are expected to attend the last rites.
Tekamah to unveil a seven ton mahogany granite monument on the courthouse lawn honoring Burt county pioneers. Gordon Folsom Bryant, a great grandson of Col B Folsom, will unveil the stone. N C Abbott of Nebraska City, president of the state historical society, will give the principal address.
The Cheyenne County Baseball League kicks off its 1931 season Sunday with seven clubs including Sunol, making their debut in Potter against last year’s champions. A cool 29 degree morning and unsettled panhandle weather accompany the opening as teams begin a season of improved clubs and brighter prospects.
Sidney sends Eleanor Rose district contralto soloist champion and John Swain tuba soloist to the state music contest in Lincoln this weekend. They depart with Mr and Mrs Julius W Cochran and Clyde Brewer. Both district winners were unanimous choices from Scottsbluff. Rose is praised as one of the finest vocal artists in western Nebraska and Swain is a renowned state tuba talent.
M. M. Davis of Dalton writes the Omaha editor urging action on Bills to bring trucks and buses under interstate commerce control and proper taxation. He argues railroads are reshaping service and that road transport should be on an equal competitive footing with rail. He notes widespread railroad cutbacks and reduced employment as context for the reform push.
Mary Ann Foley, a beauty operator, remains in critical condition at St Joseph hospital Alliance after infection developed from scalp wounds from a highway accident near Yale Siding last week. Earlier reports suggested recovery, but her condition worsened as infection set in.
