Cheyenne County hosts over 800 contracted Nebraska farmers who will finish signing 1935 corn hog applications and appraise all corn land in March. Community committeemen will visit farms to complete appraisals, with April 1 the final signing date nationwide. Absentee landlords urged to contact tenants. landlords stand to gain payment shares. A nine month old infant, child of Mr and Mrs Ralph Nelson of Kimball, burned to death Monday when a stove explosion caused a house fire. Mrs Nelson left to hang up washing and believed she had extinguished the fire before danger escalated. rescue attempts failed as flames spread rapidly.
District Four in the Nebraska American Legion leads in the state department membership drive with 89.47 percent of its quota, above the 82.59 percent average. Lawrence Schwartz of Potter heads the district efforts as districts five and one have exceeded their quotas.
Commercial students and instructor Walter Kinne will leave early Saturday for Mitchell to compete in the annual district contest. Kinne is taking strong teams and individuals confident Sidney will capture its share of the honors. District winners advance to state contests later this spring.
A light dust haze settled over Sidney and other western Nebraska towns on Wednesday while eastern Nebraska bore the brunt of the storm. Farmers reported strong winds on the table lands that eased before noon. A brief light snow flurry visited Sidney Wednesday night.
Glen Snell arrested in Kansas City earlier this month on a charge of removing mortgaged property from the state. He has not decided a plea. County Attorney Pp. J. Heaton said there was no idea when a hearing would be held. Attorney W. F. Wehmiller represents Snell.
Nearly a million Clarke McNary seedlings and transplants will be distributed to every Nebraska county starting Wednesday. Evergreen varieties ship from the Nebraska forest at Halsey and broadleaf seedlings from Fremont storage. About 60 000 trees daily are packed and sent to farmers who applied through county agents. If dry and hot, evergreens should be watered July 15 and August 15. Careful planting strengthens wind breaks and adds value.

George Gerlach of the state banking department alleged he was manhandled and warned off the bidding ring as machinery and items sold for cents to dollars. The sale to satisfy Farmers State Bank of Hemingford faces an objection. a continuance was granted to April 5 as Dewey Hanson and Paul Chaney argue for validity. Another judge may hear the matter after concerns about district judge E L Meyer’s impartiality.
The American Legion aims to finalize a April show with Young Dixon as the headliner and is negotiating Chuck Reed of Port Morgan as a potential opponent after Reed’s past victories. Fan interest centers on Reed’s power and whether he can keep Dixon at bay while drawing a capacity crowd. Some fans hope to see Faye Clark oppose Dixon, though concerns about Clark drawing power exist.
The Telegraph reports a ballot error naming George H Thompson instead of George Co Thompson for councilman. Sheriff Schulz and Chief Rogers closed all pinball and slot machines Tuesday after a slick salesman claimed mayoral approval. By noon none operated. The machines drew crowds and relief workers reportedly played heavily, but the city moved to end the trend, leaving pinball fans with dreary days ahead.
Sidney Rifle Club wins the state championship 1844 to 1805 over Valentine in a shoot-off. Sidney’s five shooters Brewer Sweet Parks Pierson and Doran led, with Valentine previously beating Sidney by seven points. The Sidney American Legion trophy will be awarded for annual competition with 30 caliber rifles to boost arms familiarity and club membership.
Potter high school won the fourth district debate tournament at Scottsbluff, defeating Bayard two to one after a late rally. Participants included Maxine Wells Stewart Nelson and Marie Robertson coached by J R Lancaster. Seven schools competed and the event used double elimination with Wyoming university professors and a Cheyenne teacher as judges.
Senators from Nebraska struggle over district numbers for a proposed unicameral legislature. Green of Sidney pushes 50 districts and a Green counties bloc, arguing smaller districts harm western representation. Other western lawmakers fear 35 districts leave western counties with overlarge territories and misrepresented needs. Dafoe of Omaha questions statewide control by Omaha. Green favors Morrill Banner Kimball Cheyenne as one district. A plan likely to face opposition from western lawmakers.
Evangelist Ross will close the week at the Christian church with his final lecture The Church Sin We're Afraid to Mention. A special musical program and 300 in Bible school are planned. A basket dinner follows morning worship in the basement parlors. Evening program in the community venue.
New and lower electric rates take effect next Monday in Sidney and across county towns served by The Western Public Service Company. Residential rates start at 8 cents per kwh for the first 35 kwh, then 4 cents for the next 65 kwh, and 2.4 cents for excess, with a $1 minimum per month. Commercial lighting starts at 8 cents for the first 100 kwh, stepping to 6, 5, 4, and 3 cents per kwh for higher blocks, plus a $1 minimum per month. The change is expected to save consumers about $70,000 overall and build goodwill for future growth.

The Rotary club meets in the Commercial hotel dining room for the first time in years. The highlight is the school orchestra directed by J. W. Cochran, an ensemble of more than 40 members making its initial appearance before the businessmen this year.
The annual spring conference of the Sixth District Nebraska PTA will be at Sidney Senior High School auditorium next Wednesday April 3. Morning and afternoon sessions are open to the public. Speaker Miss Alice Sowers of Washington will discuss parent education and lead sessions to boost PTA leadership and community study groups.
Louis Kellar, 30, a Colorado farmer, pleaded guilty at a Cheyenne County arraignment and is bound over to district court on a grain theft case. He was arrested after investigators traced stolen wheat in Cheyenne and Kimball counties and was held on $2000 bond. His next hearing date was not set.
The Telegraph News reports a complete schedule for the district music contest and festival to be published next Tuesday. Nearly a thousand students from many district schools are expected, with arrivals on April 5 requiring hotel rooms and possible Chamber of Commerce housing aid as overnight stays occur. The bulk events are planned for April 6.
The house defeats a bill to create the 19th judicial district by splitting the 13th and 14th districts and removing one 13th judgeship. By a 32 to 37 vote the house rejects a motion by Steele of Kimball. Rasdal of Ogallala, who introduced the bill and urged its kill, says he would offer amendments if revived.
Albert Kijar a Lexington past state deputy spoke at a Knights of Columbus meeting in St Patrick’s academy auditorium Monday as part of an Catholic action program. About 200 men attended with P. J. Heaton presiding. Speakers included Rev Anton Link Sidney state chaplain Rev J W Bean Dalton Rev L A Kintz Kimball and Rev Raymond Miles Chappell.
Managers of last year's wheat belt league baseball teams will meet at the Kokjer Motor company garage tonight to map plans for the 1935 season. Fans and players are expected to attend to kick off an active year. Sidney and Kimball tied for 1934 title as others aim to break their two team reign. W. E. Gerrig, president, will preside.
Sheriff W W Schulz has not decided whom he will appoint as deputy sheriff to succeed George Sheldon whose resignation is effective Monday. He may wait until the first of the week and has had several applications but made no promises and will not decide for publication until he actually names the appointee.
The American Legion continues its Arbor Day effort. Members planted many trees last year and will again request trees from locals this year. The program aligns with a regional department approved tree planting plan.
A horse and mule auction by the Julesburg Livestock Auction Company on Saturday March 30 promises one of the region s biggest sales. Col H M Garber invites farmers and others to bring their horses and mules to Julesburg for this sale.
The Union Pacific introduces a new train service schedule effective April 2 for travelers between Cheyenne and North Platte. In Sidney, eastbound train 112 departs at 7 30 p m and westbound train 115 leaves Sidney at 6 15 a m, details noted for local riders.
