ICI expands in Sidney as demand defies the economy
Roger Price, plant manager of Independent Cable Inc, says the Sidney factory is hiring fast with 52 workers and a goal of 60 as orders surge with warm weather. ICI added a third shift, shifted to six days a week, and nearly doubled raw material use in three weeks. The Eltra company began production last year in a 100,000 square foot site east of Greenwood Cemetery.

HUD Rejects Sidney Funding Request for Park and Center
HUD in Omaha advised Sidney to drop its request for 99 000 to match a 160 000 grant for Phase 2 park work and a new senior citizen center. The agency cited insufficient priority, despite the projects’ worth and prior hearings. If funds fall through, matching funds with the Game and Parks Commission may be untenable.

Nebraska lawmakers override Exon veto on juvenile commitment bill
The legislature passed LB294 over Exon's veto by a 41-0 vote, allowing courts to commit juvenile offenders to mental institutions rather than penal facilities. Exon claimed a $250,000 cost, which supporters disputed, noting costs under $50,000 and no extra appropriation. Lincoln Senator Wally Barnett argued the measure is needed for reliable sentencing of youths. No opposition was voiced.Additionally, LB588 saw a $1 million cut from $14 million to reduce merit pay, and LB245 gained first-round approval to bar antifluoridation referendums when a city buys water from a fluoridating neighbor.
