Winter Wheat Crop Outlook Is Best In Panhandle Counties
The state agricultural statistics division reports that winter wheat that failed to sprout in south central Nebraska last fall has begun to sprout, with moisture levels of six to 12 inches below expectations. A. E. Anderson says western counties show variable emergence from one eighth to one half inch, with better prospects in western Nebraska than eastern parts. Southeastern Nebraska shows more favorable conditions, while areas between have uneven stands and some seed failed to sprout or died.

Wheat yields in Nebraska uncertain despite favorable districts
Farmers report weak plants with incomplete root systems across much of the state. Some areas like Dundy, Chase and Perkins counties show better prospects while panhandle counties remain doubtful. Tests from the State College of Agriculture show March planted wheat produced 21 percent of October planted yields, averaging 7.1 bushels per acre, though experimental plots yielded at least twice the state average. Soil moisture in central Nebraska is discouraging at 6 to 12 inches, with deeper moisture 14 to 24 inches further east. Summer fallow depth ranges 3 to 4 feet in the south central area with little saturation below the surface.
