Three acts win honors at the Lodgepole Lions Club Talent Show. In the senior division the clarinet choir took first place, while Susan Bale won the intermediate division with Dr James Thayer's Omaha and Nebraskaland. Judy Hornicek of Sunol won the junior division with How Great Thou Art.
Jack Horton Rice vice president of Marathon Oils European Refining Marketing and Supply died at 2 45 p m Monday at Blanchard Valley Hospital Findlay Ohio from a cerebral hemorrhage.
Six new members were welcomed into the Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce at the Tuesday night meeting. Inductees include Alan Schilz Mark Hartzler Ken Oaken Wills Lenz Gil Mosh er and Bill Wingfield. The April 4 event will feature a tour of Western Nebraska Vocational School with Kiwanis, Farm Progress Day support led by Ken Noteboom Jr., and the Little League sponsorship planned for this year. Kimball Jaycees sent four members to issue a challenge.
Johnny Carson headlines the April 1 Show of the Century at Per-Shing Auditorium Lincoln with an 8 30 p m start. Governor Tiemann proclaims April 1 Johnny Carson Day statewide as nominations are listed by a committee.
Lincoln will host a Nebraska Centennial Celebration with Johnny Carson as the headline star at Pershing Auditorium. Civic clubs plan bus caravans, with tickets $3 to $12.50 and full seating reserved. The program features Julie Wilson, The Young Americans, Manhattan Rockets, Rage and Roman, Dick Albers, and a surprise awards segment for notable Nebraskans. Centennial dinners precede the show at multiple hotels.
Spring arrives with sun and balmy conditions in the area. A brief mid morning shower left only a trace of rain before the sun returned. Temperature ranges show a cool to mild pattern with highs near 54 to 64 and lows around 29 to 32.
Nebraska Wheat Growers president Ray Davis told Ovallala growers the single goal is a better price for wheat. He cited factors lifting prices including dry conditions, USDA open market purchases for Food For Peace, looser Food Aid, and limited government sales. He noted Western Nebraska production costs around 1.50 per bushel and warned that farmers must invest to earn a wage, as the group plans continued market development and producer information programs.
The County Historical Society reports only 920 dollars left to raise the four thousand needed to buy the McFaddens antique piano for the restored Fort Sidney commanding officer’s home. William F. Hawkins 64 died of a heart attack Monday at the Al Sittner farm east of Sidney. Funeral rites are planned at 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church with Odd Fellows services. burial Friday with military honors. He was born October 16, 1902 in Louisville Kentucky and lived in Grand Island and Kearney before moving to Sidney in 1951. He was active in Calvary Baptist Church and several fraternal and veteran groups. He is survived by his wife Mary, five daughters and two sons from a previous marriage, two brothers, three sisters, and many grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Cheyenne County will have professional ambulance service as a cooperative project of the City of Sidney and the county. The city will run the service and the county will subsidize costs beyond fees. Memorial Hospital proposal to handle the service was rejected by hospital representatives.
Six entries have been made in the annual Miss Fort Sidney Days queen pageant by the Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce. Contestants include Muriel Miller Beverly Nelson Sharon Meyer Billie Jo Smith Linda Eichthaler and Judy Houser.
A human skeleton, identified as an adult male by clothing found nearby, was discovered Sunday in a ravine along U.S. Route 30 about 1 1/4 miles east of Kimball. Nebraska Highway Patrol and Kimball County sheriff’s office investigated at a site near a new recreation area with recent excavations.
