Phares to Campaign Stop in Sidney on Tuesday
Former North Platte mayor Bob Phares announces his candidacy for Nebraska governor and will hold an 8:30 am stop at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel in Sidney as part of a 22 town tour. He, 36, was the youngest mayor of a first class city and is a North Platte insurance firm president with a family.

Reverend Wilmoth to be moved from Sidney church
Rev Rod Wilmoth, longtime First United Methodist Church minister in Sidney since June 1973, will transfer to a Nebraska church this June. Bishop Monk Bryan announced the move at Sunday services and said the new assignment will be named May 1. Wilmoth, who joined the school board in January after the November election, will stay in Sidney through June 12. He and his wife Marilyn have two children Jennifer and Jim.

UP Replaces 54 Miles of Track in Southern Panhandle
Union Pacific replaces about 54 miles of eastbound track this spring from Bushnell to beyond Colton, starting March 7 and finishing mid April. Over 100 workers, centered on Navajo crews, use $3 million in equipment to lay 133 pound rail and new tie plates. Old rail moves to branch lines. new line supports up to 70 mph while the line has been renewed about every 20 years.

John Warren, president of Pioneer Airways, announced plans to add Sidney to the flight schedule after Nebraska granted intrastate authority covering a route that includes Sidney, McCook, North Platte and Ogallala. 16 foster grandparents over 60 work with children in Sidney Day Care Center Head Start and area schools under a federal ACTION program begun 11 years ago. Grandparents receive 1.60 dollars per hour for a 20 hour week with no Social Security impact. The program, led locally by June Beeman and overseen by Donna Price, aims to provide one to one care and male role models with eight Sidney participants including 75 year old Lloyd Lundberg and 67 year old Alice Blair.
