Samoan death feast upheld by chiefs despite Western influence
In Pago Pago the annual fono defeated efforts to end the death feast. Governor Henry F. Bryan approves the persistence of the tradition. The rite centers on a food feast of pigs taro breadfruit and other staples then singing until exhaustion, a practice funded by the deceased’s family. High chiefs’ lineages can bankrupt communities through preparation costs.
