Minuteman missiles form backbone of U S defense
Amid uncertain talks on the U S missile program the Minuteman remains central. About 200 missiles are deployed across western Nebraska eastern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming with a major upgrade planned for 1969 1970 and 1971 at Warren AFB Cheyenne. Minuteman III recently scored a bullseye at Cape Kennedy strengthening its role. MIRV development could deploy multiple warheads and decoys to complicate antiballistic defenses.
