Green Manuring An Ancient Soil Improvement Method

Green manuring involving plowing under green crops to improve soil is an old practice rather than a new discovery. Romans sowed lupines to turn under in May, with Germany adopting lupines in the 1800s to reclaim sandy Prussian lands. Lupines and other greens are used in England, India, and Japan, while the United States relies more on green-manure crops in the South and under irrigation in the West.
