Wheat In Early Dough Stage Is Good Hay Crop
Wheat hay cut at the early dough stage resembles mature prairie hay in nutritive content and can be used similarly. Oats or barley may yield better hay. rye is least desirable. Cereal hay is low in protein and should be balanced with a protein supplement. Cutting in the dough stage increases digestible nutrients. but straw quality matters for palatability. With 35 bu acre yield, wheat produced over 4 tons hay per acre. at $2 per bushel grain and $15 per ton hay, the hay value lagged grain by about $10 per acre.
