City Manager Tom Coffey presented a 1964-65 budget showing a lower mill levy of about 19 mills on a $12 million property valuation, with one mill added to cover airport runway expansion. The $632,655 budget includes the city library and potential valuation gains, while noting sufficient revenue from taxation excluding debt service.
Cash sales of Series E and H savings bonds in Cheyenne County totalled 748,637 for the first five months of 1964, reaching 75.4 percent of the annual quota. May sales totalled 91,441 as the Operation Security drive runs through July 4. Cheyenne leads Region 16, with $2,232,859 for five months and 60.3 percent of its regional quota.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce retail committee invites church groups sororities service clubs and other organizations to participate in the annual Crazy Days and Sidewalk Sale next month. The three day event runs July 16 17 and 18 with the Sidewalk Sale on Saturday July 18. Cash prizes totaling 25 will be awarded for best costumes worn by sales staff judged anonymously by officials. Organizations should notify the chamber office by July 8 to secure sidewalk space for booths.
The council rejected adding meters on 9th Ave between Illinois and Hickory Sts after a planning commission recommendation. Council also reviewed overall meter usage, advised City Manager Coffey to seek study input on airport runway expansion, and awarded paving and crossing contracts. An ordinance added land to city limits near the county ASC office. Electric utility debt-free projection set for late 1967 or early 1968.
Potter Lions Club names six directors for 1964 Potter Days. D. Fred Enevoldsen repeats as chairman. Kenneth Rose secretary and Rudy Dedic treasurer. Other members Carl Larson Ray Wickhorst Gil Hougen. Dates set for Sept 11 12 before Dal ton Fall Festival Sept 14 15. Green's Amusement Co. to provide carnival attractions. Planning starts in July.
Petitions circulating in Sidney call for a constitutional amendment to allow partisan elections for Nebraska’s unicameral legislature with a November vote. Backers argue it would make legislators more accountable to parties and improve efficiency, as redistricting disputes threaten current nonpartisan districts and an ongoing Lincoln court case could affect November ballots.
Two Sidney boys, Steve Harlan 15 and Dale Foland 13, prepare for the Sixth Annual National Boy Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge Pa July 17 24 with Troop 54 from Tinta Tonka District. A three day Riverside Park training starts tomorrow ahead of the trip which includes stops in Omaha Chicago Washington New York and Philadelphia. Steve carries an Eagle rank and Bronze Palm plus God and Country Award while Dale recent First Class rank and personal fitness merit badge mark his progress.
The Scottsbluff Weather Bureau declares a five day moratorium on rain promising sunny weekend for fishing picnics and lounging in the sun. Officials caution there is no responsibility for scattered showers.
Weather stays fair through tomorrow with highs around 80 to 85 degrees today and 50 to 55 overnight. Tomorrow highs near 85 to 90, continued dry conditions. Temperatures through Monday are expected to run 3 to 8 degrees above normal.
The moon will undergo a partial eclipse this Wednesday evening, with rise and shadow visible around 7:27 p m and completing by 8:04 p m. Robert Hartman from the Federal Aviation Agency notes the event and urges spectators to look southeast at twilight.
About 112 Gurley High School alumni are expected for the biennial reunion at Gurley Legion Hall this Saturday. A social hour from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. precedes a 6:30 banquet and business meeting, followed by a public dance with Rhythm-nicks of Bridgeport. Admission is 1.0 dollar per person.
The Rev. Melvin Morrow is due in Dalton this weekend as the new pastor of the Dalton Presbyterian Church. He and his bride will reside in the church manse. Ordination and installation, after his spring seminary graduation, is set for early July.
State Board of Educational Lands and Funds schedules an oil gas lease sale for July 7 featuring three parcels totaling 1,600 acres. Cheyenne County tracts include Sec 16-12-90 and Sec 36-16-53, with additional parcel in Scotts Bluff County Part of Sec 36-22-54.
The county ASC office expects to mail wheat allotment notices to cooperators in July as 1965 figures arrive. Substitution between wheat and feed grain will apply to the 1965 programs with sign-ups set for late August and early September before the winter wheat seeding. ASC plans to discuss 1965 rules and urges farmers to review their individual eligibility and requirements.
Major Warren J. Bale of Lodgepole Nebraska received special recognition from Air Force Secretary Eugene M. Zuckert during the 10th anniversary of missile and space progress. Bale, a research and development officer with the Space Systems Division in Los Angeles, is among more than 850 SSD personnel. He holds a BS from the University of Oklahoma and is married to Hazel S. Tannehill.
Donald Gade 32 of Sidney is in critical condition with a broken neck after a late night crash two miles north and 17 miles east of Gurley. Passenger Richard Schiller 33 of Sidney injured, but walked to a nearby farm to report the accident.
Gene Wahrman a Kokjer Motor Company salesman was among 32 of about 600 Denver zone entrants to win a prize in Chevrolet’s April May sales fair. The award includes a three day trip to the New York World’s Fair for Wahrman and his wife and a two day Nassau excursion. They depart Denver July 14. The Denver zone covers Colorado Wyoming New Mexico and western Kansas Nebraska and South Dakota. DRIVE CAREFULLY.

An offset to the Johnson discovery near Dalton aims to develop the No 1 Goodwin GWSE Section 26-17-50 while No 1 Edgar E Anderson north of Potter seeks a new western field with Toltek Drilling Co on site. Davis drills wildcats near Potter and Harrisburg, with Llano linkage sought, plus Shanaman area activity around Scotts Bluff County. Chandler confirms Ibex Field production and other operators push new producers, while DeKalb and Ozark plan further wildcat tests in Sioux County and Casper farmouts.
