Substitute crops eyed to ink idle wheat acres at ag station
At the High Plains Agricultural Laboratory near Sidney a field day highlighted millet and sorghum as potential substitutes for wheat. Proso millet tolerates low moisture and cool nights, while sorghum requires a cool-tolerant variety. Farmers noted interest in moisture conservation, fertilizer efficiency, and fungicide control as they brace for likely 1970 acreage cuts and continued low wheat prices. Carryover wheat stocks on July 1 are expected to reach at least 800 million bushels.
