Factors Influencing N106 Hog Price Trends

A county agent summary explains how hog prices move with supply and demand. It cites a 13 percent rise in bred sows last fall, 28.7 percent more fall pigs, 37 percent more pork stored, and an estimated seven million hogs consumed last year. Corn acreage in 1923 may be 25 percent higher, while foreign demand accounts for 20 percent of pork. Higher city purchasing power may support prices, yet hogs often price lower when corn crops fail. Central markets showed 57 percent more hogs in April and four months of 1928 were 41 percent above 1927 totals, per Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports.
