The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 that neither the Constitution nor the Social Security law requires states to fund elective abortions for Medicaid patients. The decision benefits the federal position that abortion rights do not entail a right to free treatment. President Carter opposes federal funding for abortions.
The Wheat Field Day will be held Friday at the High Plains Agricultural Laboratory north of Sidney starting 8:30 a.m. Howard Henschel acts as master of ceremonies with welcome by Ken Barton and remarks by Dr. M A Massengale. Experts from UNL and Panhandle Station discuss wheat varieties rotation ecofallow weed control and field tour topics. Refreshments provided by Wheatbelt Public Power District.
Weekend events at the 13th annual All Breed Horse Show produced a variety of winners across divisions. Results are listed in today’s sports section.
Nebraska Department of Roads plans a busy summer with resurfacing of 792 miles of Highway 385 from north of Dalton to the Morrill County line in a $408,450.38 project by WA Biba Engineering Co and Biba Co of Geneva, widening to 28 feet with a four inch asphalt layer. Guard rails estimated at $16,504 were let to Hills Sand & Gravel Co of Polk. A separate plan resurface eight miles of Highway 26 west of Oshkosh for $350,000 by Missouri Valley Construction Co and partners, with culverts and guard rails. A new Northport North Platte River bridge bid will be let with work to start this fall and finish next year. Tree planting along Interstate from Potter to the Wyoming line totaled $130,000, requiring one-year survival checks.
In a week of odd thefts Saco police hunted for a missing plastic pig after Karl Brandt found his front lawn hog vanished. Earlier a fiberglass cow was recovered from a theft at a restaurant on US 1 and a wooden eight foot rooster was dumped in a swamp near the Kennebec River after being taken from Lord's Henhouse Restaurant.
Dick Boness announces resignation after one season as Sidney head football coach to return to Alliance High School in Nebraska. He will coach Alliance's team and lead a federally funded adult education pilot, while continuing conditioning duties this summer. Boness, 82-48-6 overall coaching record, has coached at Mullen Imperial Gordon Valentine Alliance St Agnes and Sidney.
Frances Craig reports on Mud Springs Museum near Dalton now open in the old Mud Springs schoolhouse. The site marks a Pony Express Station era watering stop and overnight facility along the Overland Trail beloved by emigrants and soldiers.
