Good Pasture Produces High Quality Beef, NC State Study
North Carolina State College research shows pasture-fed steers gain faster than dry-lot cattle. Dr. B R Barrick notes pasture-fed animals gained 15 percent quicker and used 360 pounds less grain and 85 pounds less protein for the same gain, with pasture requiring no hay. The study outlines a fattening plan: winter on pasture with roughage, add concentrate for one pound daily gain, then grain on pasture in spring and summer before fall marketing.
