Seizure of Coal Mines Debated by Senate
The Senate discussed government seizure of coal mines as a possible remedy to the ongoing strike. Senator Lenroot urged government takeover of sufficient mines to secure winter coal, especially for the Northwest, while Senators Walsh Calder and Norris suggested emergency or permanent government operation, countered by Sutherland and King. Secretary Hoover disclosed efforts to mediate between operators and miners, noting they had produced no concrete settlement so far and that he doubts governmental authority to end or intervene in the strike.
