Bayard Gift of God Pageant Draws Thousands Near Chimney Rock
Thousands attended the seventh annual Gift of God pageant at Chimney Rock near Bayard over Tuesday and Wednesday under starry skies. More than 2000 joined Tuesday, with numbers doubling on Wednesday and larger crowds anticipated. Vehicles came from 26 Nebraska counties and from Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, California and Washington. Rev. Louis H. Kaub of Lexington read Bible texts before each episode, introducing Rev. John Patterson of Bayard. Bishop F. D. Leete of Omaha gave the vocation. The cast includes over 100 characters and more than 300 participants overall.

Hottest Sidney Day Sees 100 Degree Reading
Wednesday marked the year’s peak heat in Sidney with a midafternoon high near 100 degrees the first 100 degree reading recorded in 1934. The day remained sultry with a southeast breeze and traces of rain by evening as temperatures began to fall before five. Scattered county showers and light hail offered minimal drought relief. Lodge Pole Man Kahrs Dies After Six Months Illness
John Peter Kahrs, 59, longtime Lodge Pole area farmer, died in a local hospital last Saturday after a six month illness. Born in Germany, he came to America in 1893 and lived in West Point and Ashland before settling on a Lodge Pole farm in 1909. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Lodge Pole Lutheran Church with Rev. Goldenstein officiating and interment in Lodge Pole Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, three children, two brothers and a sister.

Army maneuvers by Twentieth Infantry on public tour
Fifty six members of the 20th Infantry from Fort Warren visited Sidney for a two day field tour to demonstrate national defense. The marching band of twenty two played a free concert to about 300 people at the city auditorium. Captain A T Wright led the tour and spoke on national defense. Soldiers then performed field maneuvers for a crowd of several hundred before continuing to Ogallala and other stops.

Legion Urges Sidney Stores Open July Fourth Hours
The American Legion asks Sidney storeowners and managers to stay open at least part of the day on July Fourth to give celebrants a place to escape the heat. A committee will urge the chamber of commerce to keep shops open until 1 or 2 pm if not all day, amid varied policies among merchants. A long parade with three bands is planned, with events overlapping to fit the day’s program.

Walter Cole Committted to Hastings Insane Hospital
Walter Cole a 25 year old Dalton man attempted suicide Monday by inhaling carbon monoxide in his brother's truck. He was committed Wednesday by the sanity board to the Hastings state hospital for the insane after surviving the gas exposure left his mind nearly blank and unable to recognize anyone except his sister in law. He had been despondent over his father's death two months earlier and was restrained by several men after the incident. He is unmarried and has two brothers in Dalton.

Good Roads Movement Starts In Cheyenne County
Arthur Bowring of Merriman, a former state senator, led the Cheyenne county good roads unit forming Monday night with chambers of commerce and community clubs from nearby towns. He outlined a two vote per county system to equalize influence on road improvements and aid county boards in a permanent road plan. Bowring praised J. W. Bonnie Odell Gardner eight year old daughter of Mr and Mrs R H Gardner of Tillamook Ore was instantly killed about four o clock Saturday afternoon in an automobile accident several miles east of Kimball caused by striking a rig and collision of two machines The little girl believed to have been thrown through a window and pinned beneath the car as it rolled into a ditch Her head was crushed Her mother suffered shoulder lacerations and shock but a brother Charles was unhurt The driver of the car Dale Wakum of Twin Falls Idaho a friend driving the Gardners to Kansas City to visit relatives also escaped uninjured The Oregon car was traveling west Another car with Wyoming license was going east A dog jumped from the roadside in front of the latter car which swerved but unable to avert striking the animal Its course was deflected into the Gardner car which was sent into the ditch No one in the Wyoming car was badly hurt.

Operation On McIntosh Youngster In Denver Hospital

The Carl Livoni family left Sidney Monday for Phoenix Arizona where Mr Livoni will join the distributing plant of Quaker State Oil Company.
