Hail Vigil Observed As Panhandle Crops Face Risk
Western Nebraska farmers monitor clouds as 1968 yields hinge on weather. A Broadwater area hailstorm damaged alfalfa corn and beets on several farms, with Box Butte County sugar beet losses totaling 2 400 acres heavy and 200 acres light. USDA raises winter wheat yield estimate to 31 bushels per acre based on May rains, while lingering hail and grasshopper fears loom for the season.
