Inflation and controls dominate NSGA convention in Nebraska

The Nebraska Stock Growers Association opens its 87th annual meeting in North Platte with Cal Coulter blaming inflation and government intervention for higher costs and weaker cattle prices. Congresswoman Virginia Smith was to speak on imported meat inspections as the convention proceeds.

Wheat King Festival Opens in Chappell with Weekend Events

Chappell prepares for the Wheat King Festival with a Market Place tent featuring crafts and baked goods. Eight teams compete in the Wheat King Olympics at the high school field Saturday. A 9 p.m dance, a Sunday worship service with Rev. A Elwood Fleming, and the Sounds of Victory gospel concert cap the weekend. The Wheat King Open Golf Tournament also occurs on Sunday.

Interstate 80 sculpture in Sidney hailed as spectacular work

Designer Hans Van de Bovenkamp calls the Roadway Confluence sculpture the best of 10 interstate works as 12 workers grind and weld the 36 foot high aluminum piece. It is slated for a July 4 dedication at the east Sidney rest area with completion hoped for several other sites by early July.

Decker Wins Appeal for Sidney Retail Liquor License

Sidney businessman Bob Decker welcomed a Nebraska Liquor Control Commission ruling granting a retail package liquor license for his Tru Valu Family Center at 2344 Jackson after appealing a Sidney City Council denial. The license will be issued after a 20 foot archway connects two buildings and after inspections, with Decker promising low prices and extended hours. The council was represented at the Lincoln hearing by City Attorney Tom Dorwart.

Ford and Reagan fight for Missouri delegates

Ford and Reagan duel for Missouri's 19 at large delegates at the GOP convention amid a tight national race. An AP survey shows Ford leading Reagan in total delegates, while Carter dominates the Democratic field as Illinois and other states hold conventions.
