Poison Plant Found Behind Cattle Deaths in Morrill County
Dr J M Simpson a county veterinary investigated cattle deaths in Morrill County and identified Zigadenus or death camas as the poison. The plant, about a foot tall with thin green leaves and small white flowers, resembles an onion at the base, leading children to mistake it for white onions. Thousands of sheep die yearly in the West from zigadenus, and this is its first documented discovery in western Nebraska.
