Extension News Service reports a Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station test at Lincoln found yellow corn better for growth in rats. Rats fed white corn stalled in growth and some died, while those fed yellow corn showed normal growth by the end of the experiment.
Scientists report an experiment showing that animals fed yellow corn weighed more than twice those fed white corn. The test aims to prove yellow corn contains growth factors not present in white corn and suggests white corn could be enhanced with supplemental feeds to match the benefits. Further trials will test adding feeds to offset white corn’s deficiencies.
Fifty three Webster county boys and girls organize a standard club to raise calves. Sixty three purebred calves cost a total of 15715 and are cared for by the members. Calves are Herefords and Shorthorns with average costs of 228 and 270 respectively.
A Nebraska College of Agriculture circular urges confining roosters and producing infertile eggs during poor weather. It claims infertile eggs keep longer and may fetch higher prices. The notice advises clean nests, one nest per six hens, twice daily gathering, biweekly marketings, cool dry ventilation, away from odors, sun protection, candling eggs, and comparing buyers for infertile eggs.
The Nebraska College of Agriculture releases two circulars: Suggestions for Household Exhibits at County Fairs and The Buffet Luncheon. The fair circular covers women’s roles, exhibit setup, judges’ rules, and premium lists. The luncheon circular offers decoration ideas, menus, dining room gear, and a detailed fifty-guest menu with portioning. Both are free to obtain.
Poultry raisers and others are invited to a special poultry field and picnic day at the University Farm in Lincoln on June 11.
