Dakota County Seats Rivalry in Black Hills History
A letter recounts how Dakota Territory split into three counties Lawrence, Custer and Pennington during the last session. Governor Pennington pushed nominations from Yankton and local towns to pick county seats, with Hayward City winning in the central area and Deadwood eyed for Lawrence County. The piece notes fears over a new Territory and debates about boundaries between Dakota and Wyoming, while Cheyenne reports spread stories about city siting west of the meridian.
