Congressman Dave Martin announced a plan to impose temporary wage and price controls for six to twelve months. He cited inflation, high interest rates, fading production, a stock market drop, and a federal deficit as justification after studying the economy and government efforts.
Nebraska reports 31 miles of I 80 left to complete with work in Devel Cheyenne and Kimball counties and portions in Omaha. Nationwide, 70 percent of the 42,500 mile system is open to traffic with 29,906 miles. Nebraska has spent 296 million of 343 million for the project.
A new corporation named Beef-A-Matic Inc formed by ten Cheyenne County men plans grain and stock production and marketing. Authorized capital is 100000 dollars, with 100 shares each of 100 dollars. Incorporators include Dr James W Edwards and others. The company began May 25 and will feed cattle at Dinklage Feed Yards near Sidney with potential expansion to other sites.
Lawrence Hodgkinson, 172, 1704 Jackson, died Saturday of a heart attack. A retired Sioux Army Depot employee with 22 years of service, his funeral will be a military graveside service at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery. Craigs Holewick Funeral Home handles arrangements. Survived by wife Kathryn, sisters Gertrude Sherman and Alita Scherdt, and brother Marvin of Reno.
Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission staff moved to its new location in the Marathon Oil building at 900 5th Ave. The move disrupted a Memorial Day holiday but personnel volunteered to relocate. Marathon will retain some space as the commission wraps up at 1015 1/2 Illinois St.

Nebraska Director of Aeronautics Paul E. Burker told a Washington Senate committee that small city growth depends on federal support for local air service. He warned Frontier Airlines may cut multiple Nebraska flights June 1 and urged subsidies to sustain all regional routes.
The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce board of directors will meet Tuesday night at eight o'clock at the chamber offices.
About 600 Communications Workers of America members across six states will return to work after settlement of a non-contract dispute. The pact raises wages 75 cents hourly over three years retroactive to last November and expires April 30, 1973, with improvements in benefits and fringe provisions.
Police investigated several acts of vandalism and a theft over Memorial Day weekend. Carl Christ Jr. reported a stolen car battery from his vehicle at 1834 Newton. Gale Brumbaugh’s battery was taken from a car at 1605 12th Avenue. Milton Kreinbring reported a camera and 17 stereo tapes stolen from his car on Linden. Les Hand Jr. said his 305 cc motorcycle was stolen from Monte Vista Drive but found abandoned on U S 30 west of Sidney.
The centennial celebration kicks off Thursday in Sidney running through Sunday with a Forsythe and Dewis Carnival near 12th and Jackson and an opening ceremony at the American National Bank Drive-In. Events include parades, dances, prize contests, water fights, a go cart race, and a senior center program with daily registration and prize drawings.
All Democrats and Republicans are invited to attend the annual county conventions this week at the Ft. Sidney Motor Hotel. Democrats meet Thursday at seven, Republicans at eight, to conduct routine business including election of a county central committee and officers, delegate destinations, and resolutions for state or national parties. County Chairman Frank Mattoon will not seek re election.
A three man Dutch trade mission touring U S wheat regions reports a global shortage of high protein hard red winter wheat. They cite overproduction in general but rising protein needs, noting Holland imports much flour wheat from France and stresses the demand for protein rich grain to blend with lower quality wheat. They meet Nebraska producers and visit storage facilities.
A motorcycle chased by Sidney police struck an ambulance responding to a heart attack call. Rider Randy Warren 15 and passenger David Geiger 16 were hospitalized in satisfactory condition. Warren and Geiger face charges of reckless driving and driving without a license in Cheyenne County Court.
Darrell Johnson is named deputy sheriff for Cheyenne County per Sheriff Kermit Brumbaugh. A Sterling, Colorado native raised in Sidney, he began duty Monday as the second full-time deputy, filling a yearlong vacancy since Ray Smith resigned last May. He previously worked in the Jack and Jill Market meat department and served in the U S Navy after high school. He spent three years as production foreman for Solar Aircraft in San Diego, and he and his wife Barbara have three children Shawnda 8 Shannon 5 and Shane 2.
The summer Driver Education class for Sidney High and St. Patrick’s begins 8 a.m. June 8 at Sidney Senior High School. Carl Crouse says 145 students registered. classes run 8 to 11 a.m. June 8–19 for 10 sessions. Students include sophomores and a few juniors and ninth graders.
