Salina's aggressive recovery after base closure becomes model
Five Sidney men traveled to Salina Kansas to study how Salina rebuilt after Schilling Air Force Base closed. Salina formed an Airport Authority, borrowed powers, moved its municipal airport to the base, attracted Beechcraft and Westinghouse, built vocational and higher education facilities, and repurposed the old base hospital into a rehab center. The Chamber of Commerce gained 210 new members and the city shows strong industrial growth and land for future development. The Sidney visitors report that recovery requires initiative and hard work, not luck.
