Western governors weigh energy tax to fund exports

Ten state Western Governors' Conference in Santa Fe ordered staff to study methods for taxing energy produced for export. The group aims to ensure adequate taxes on natural resources to fund roads sewers schools and other services while avoiding creating energy colonies. Sidney Council creates five member Board of Adjustment

The Sidney City Council named James Edwards Lowry Lindell John Peetz Jr Carl Schmidt and John Egging to a five member Board of Adjustment to handle variance requests and act as an appeals board. Joanne Goodwin was named an alternate member. Egging had joined the board earlier. one member must be from the planning commission. Edwards Lindell Peetz and Schmidt were elected on a 41 vote though Mrs Matzke opposed. City officials were asked to draft a bare bones zoning ordinance to govern board operations.

Japanese students tour Cheyenne County in exchange visit

Ten Japanese youths, aged 12 to 17, hosted by 4H families in Cheyenne County, arrive for a month with the Sabo International Exchange Foundation. They visit farms, learn English through family drills, sample Panhandle sunsets, and ride a combine while noting cultural and dietary differences.

Grand Island Hastings Councils Backing Shared Power Plant

The Grand Island and Hastings City Councils move toward a jointly built power generating facility. A bi city power committee urged legal and financial consultations as both councils approved the recommendations. Hastings followed with similar action.

Tax levy may rise half mill for Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County plans an estimated county budget of 1.7 million dollars for the new fiscal year up 14 percent from 1.3 million. Commissioner Ed Narjes proposes keeping the mill levy near 13 mills from 12.65 to fund a salary raise for staff and higher judicial and law enforcement costs. A public hearing on the spending plan is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the courthouse. Grand Island plans a 50 million dollar bond for a 150 megawatt facility with Hastings seeking 30 million. Downtown free parking district faces a vote after business owners petition for dissolution but the council rejects the move 5-2. The Downtown Improvement Board targets August 15 23 to begin free parking operations.
