A wine bottle was thrown through a window at the Army Surplus Store in Sidney, likely Friday night or Saturday morning. Police found no sign of forced entry and the bottle was empty.

Pre-School Test Applications Due August 7

Two Combines Meet Damage Heavy Near Sidney

Two combines were heavily damaged Saturday afternoon six miles east of Sidney at the Highway 30 bridge when their projecting ends collided while being moved on trucks. No owners identified. Wheat trucks suffered about 300 in damage near Lorenzo. In a separate crash a 1935 truck and a 1970s model collided on Illinois Street causing 175 in damage. SOD Makes Army Films Available

Sioux Ordnance Depot announces a new film service for the public to obtain Army sound motion pictures for group showings. The selection covers many Army branches but not all films. requests require three weeks lead time and no projection equipment is provided. Funeral Saturday for Mrs J C Hatcher 82

Funeral services were held Saturday morning from First Methodist Church for Effie Jane Gray Hatcher 82 who died Wednesday evening in Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery with Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers included Lee Lives Henry Haupt Marinus Christensen Roy Greenlee Harold Lyngholm and James Mohatt.

Swedish CAP Cadets Arrive in Sidney for Exchange Visit

The Sidney Civil Air Patrol squadron hosts five Swedish CAP cadets arriving at Sidney Municipal Airport and touring Cheyenne County. They stay in a North Platte River cabin, visit Otto Anderson’s Hay Springs cattle ranch, and depart Friday for Omaha. Two Swedish Air Force escorts accompany the group among 20 nations taking part this year in CAP exchange programs.

Damage reports from two Friday night crashes

Two motor vehicle accidents with over $100 property damage occurred minutes apart on a county road near Sidney. A 1955 model pickup driven by Allen McGee overturned after missing a dead end. damage estimated at $458 by the sheriff, with no injuries. A separate 13th Avenue and Illinois Street collision estimated $150 damage, no injuries.

Cheyenne County wheat forecast tops six million bushels

Cheyenne County farmers may harvest more than six million bushels of winter wheat if weather cooperates. The 1957 crop could be among the top bumper yields, lifting county income to over 11 million dollars and placing Cheyenne in the top ten U.S. wheat producers. Harvesting expanded across the county with high yields reported from Lodgepole, Lorenzo, Brownson, Sidney, Potter and Gurley, while Dalton remains wet. Labor is tight as crews and combines are in demand, and weather officials forecast generally fair, hot conditions with light moisture through Saturday. Rail movement to eastern terminals continues with over 100 cars shipped by nightfall.

Fire Threat Rises as Harvest Spreads in Cheyenne County

Wheat fields and heavy stubble push farmers and crews to the limit as fires erupt across Cheyenne County. Sidney and surrounding departments battled multiple blazes involving farms near Huntsman Brauer Nieman Raddatz and others with about 20 to 40 acres of wheat reported destroyed and total losses around 1100 in three fires.
