The 20 percent increase in federal retirement payments adds about $417,000 yearly for Cheyenne County residents on Social Security, with October checks reflecting the rise and higher averages for individuals and couples. Total area payments rise to about $2.5 million next year from $2.1 million.
County officials schedule a public hearing Tuesday at the Court House to review a 1972-73 budget totaling 1,594,416.14 with a 435,059.57 increase over last year. Major rises hit the general, road and ambulance funds, while library funding rises to 38,966.48 not included in the levy.
Western Nebraska Technical College reports higher summer quarter enrollment than 1971, with students from Nebraska, Washington, California, South Dakota, Wyoming and Kansas registering for programs in automobile and diesel mechanics, aviation, building construction, business and offices, electronics, drafting, electric wiring and welding. Fall registrations underway, fall classes begin Oct 9 with the basic mechanics course full and heavy equipment not accepting new registrations until July 7 1973.

Jerry Ben Jurgens, 20, of Gurley faces motor vehicle homicide charges after a Tuesday crash near Gothenburg that killed 19 year old Thomas Chromy of Morse Bluff and injured Jurgens and 20 year old Doug Shipley of Sidney. Chromy died when the 1965 Mustang went off center and struck a tree on a county road one mile south and three miles east of Gothenburg. Jurgens and Shipley were hospitalized with injuries. bond hearing details were not available.
Frontier Airlines reports a second quarter profit of 3.8 million, reversing a year-ago loss, with six month earnings at 3.1 million. President A L Feldman says results reflect Civil Aeronautics Board subsidies for 1971 to 1972, offset by earlier-period payments and a prior non recurring write off.
The State Board of Parole denied parole to Douglas Huggins 21 of Ogallala who faced a one to three year sentence for burglary and feloniously entering a building. He was convicted in Cheyenne County District Court and began serving in April 1971.
The village of Potter schedules a public hearing Monday at 8 p.m. in the village office to discuss a proposed budget of 52,879.87 for the next fiscal year, with allocations across funds and a total property tax requirement of 13,230.11.
