Western Nebraska grain elevators near full amid UP strike

Governor J J Exon was told by Glen Kreuscher that western Nebraska elevators from Ogallala to Kimball are full and not accepting wheat as a UP strike disrupts rail transport. The shortage risks six months of storage strain, higher handling costs, and potential price declines for farmers. Elevator managers Don Eichner and Kim Ledbetter described being forced to halt deliveries and needing more space and railcars to move oats and millet.

Tall straw creates harvest hazards and mulching options

Cheyenne County Agent Ken Sakurada warns two to three foot tall wheat and rye straw may challenge farmers this year. Some bale and sell straw, others plow under residue or burn, though soil damage makes burning unpopular. Mulching or chopping with a rotary chopper is advised, with local balers like Clarence Yates of Scottsbluff expecting brisk business. Fires from muffler exhausts already damaged trucks during harvest, marking a tough season for grain and straw.
