Violent Weather Hits Irrigated and Dryland Crops Panhandle
In the Nebraska Panhandle, crop losses from violent weather and disease may top 5 million dollars. Both irrigated and dryland crops suffered from heavy rain, hail, and winds since late May, with some regions like the North Platte Valley and Alliance hit hardest. Despite damage, scattered areas report good winter wheat yields and ongoing harvests of feed grains safflower and irrigated crops. Local ASC officials anticipate large releases of penalty wheat as the 1962 harvest shortfalls.
