Wheat Acreage Cut Prompts Debate Across Panhandle Counties
The 69 acre reduction and a 92 thousand acre loss in wheat land in 1969 raise questions for eleven Nebraska Panhandle counties. If next year yields match expectations, a 30 bushel average could mean around 2.76 million bushels less production, over ten percent of anticipated output. The cut, now a second straight year of sizable reductions, leaves farmers pondering what to plant or how to offset income loss as wheat prices face decades-low levels.
