Irrigation Prospects Grow in Lodge Pole Valley and Cheyenne County

Tests by Charles Green and associates show underground water in the Lodge Pole valley can supply vast irrigation. Shallow swells yield water at low cost, enabling ditch systems to irrigate thousands of acres. Pumping plants with tractors suggest per acre costs can be kept low, promoting diversified crops and heavier farming activity. Local wells show water depths of 4 to 60 feet with thick underground veins and nearly inexhaustible supply. A McIntosh and Martin test found 1200 gallons per minute from a 00 foot strike, costing under £2.00 for 12 hours of fuel. If properly ditched, single pump setups could irrigate 25–40 acres without natural moisture, expanding with ground conditions. Public interest foresees demand for large canal systems and capital, yet profitability is deemed practical for western Nebraska farming.
