Icehouses In Nebraska Date Back To The 1820s
Ice was a luxury in Nebraska history with early use at Fort Atkinson in the 1820s. John A. Gilman opened a Nebraska City butcher shop in 1856 selling ice, Magnus Johnson built an icehouse in 1857, and by 1871-2 Winquest operated icehouses along the Missouri River. The Fremont Ice Company began artificial ice in 1883, while earlier towns along the river cut from rivers or ponds. By 1907 Holdrege and Loup City ponds supplied ice, illustrating a transition from river and pond sources to industrial production.
