Wheat Harvest Hits Peak in Southern Panhandle

Alys Lafler Crowned 1976 Cheyenne County Fair Queen

Alys Lafler of Sidney was crowned queen of the 1976 Cheyenne County Fair and Rodeo. She is 16 and attends Sidney High School. First attendant is Beth Glassburn and second attendant is Patricia Glanz, both Sidney residents. The pageant used an extemporaneous essay and horsemanship tests. Her sisters Dawn and Valera previously held royal titles. The queen and attendants will parade in Cheyenne Sterling and Ogallala ahead of the Aug 20 23 fair.

Tax payments above normal signal regional strength

Cheyenne County Treasurer Milt Nissen notes tax receipts far exceed normal levels with about 83 percent of 1975 real estate and personal property taxes paid by July 1. New superintendent to attend Sidney Board meeting

Ron Reichert, new superintendent of schools, is expected to attend the Sidney Board of Education meeting at 7:45 p.m. in the Junior High School Library. It will be his first meeting since accepting the post in June. The 1976 77 budget will be among the items discussed.

Nebraska Enacts 100 New Laws After 1976 Session

Nebraskans face 100 new laws taking effect after a 90 day waiting period following the Unicameral adjournment. The 1976 session produced 216 enacted measures from 169 held over and 398 introduced. About 100 laws carry emergency clauses for immediate effect. the rest await the 90 days. Dr. C J Cornelius notes budget cuts and a bare bones plan with salary increases and inflation pressures. The board may buy an activities bus and pursue a five year roof repair program. Bids, new teachers, tuition rates, student rights, activity ticket costs, and a budget hearing are on tonight’s agenda.

Dr Nelson backs WTCC Area board candidates

Dr H C Nelson of Sidney, past president of the WTCC Area board, supports Albert W. Crites and Donald Burkhiser of Chadron for board seats. The Scottsbluff-Gering United Chamber of Commerce had urged their resignation, accusing them of prioritizing Chadron State College over WTCC. Nelson criticized local business leaders for self serving motives.
