High Priced Butter and Meat Shortage Hit Sidney Housewives
Sidney housewives paid eighty cents a pound for butter Tuesday as dealers and processors raised prices to absorb a subsidy ended with the OPA. Meat shortages persisted at the start of the week despite record receipts at terminal markets, with at least one market out of meat. Packers predicted relief by week’s end and general price control now rests with the consumer, who may have to cut meals until prices normalize. Stores noted prices would likely rise slightly, with goods returning to normal only if patience and demand temper hoarding.
