The July Fourth celebration in Sidney featured Joe Oberfelder and F.H. De Castro as organizers. A morning program at the courthouse included speeches by J.J. McIntosh and readings of the Declaration of Independence. After dinner, a calisthenics show and a baseball game, won by the citizens 14 to 11, entertained attendees. Evening fireworks and dancing capped a day that drew crowds and noted weather challenges.
The annual department rifle competition for selected marksmen will be held at Fort Omaha Nebraska under Major Guy W Henry starting Tuesday August 4 with post commanders sending enlisted competitors to Captain Evan Miles by August 8. Officers listed to duty at the camp report by August 20.
A surplus from the fourth of July celebration funds a grand ball at White House hall on the Mth inst. Tickets are gratis with admission by invitation only. The notice also reports on evolving sporting amusements from walking and prize fights to horse racing and a trotting dog, citing a tragic tale of a dog driven to death by its driver.
