Gas Tax Drive Fails to Gain Signatures in Nebraska

Leaders said a move to place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot to bar gas tax use from funding anything but highways failed for lack of petitions. Only about 40,000 signatures were collected, 20,000 short of the 60,000 needed. The effort came after a social security program funded by a gas tax. Two other November amendments include repealing bank stockholder double liability and abolishing the land commissioner office.
