Sidney city officials tackled the annual budget amid rising service costs and a lower total valuation. They expect the mill levy near last year’s 24 mills while state factors and railroad utility valuation changes affect revenue. Budget hinges on $11 million valuation with tax income offset by property and vehicle tax shifts.
Final distribution of 1958 United Fund funds in Sidney will occur Thursday evening at the Elks Club. Representatives from six participating organizations are to attend and accept the checks. The drive, part of Sidney's first United Fund campaign, fell short of its goal but was deemed a success by leaders.
Ray Averill, 67, died Sunday evening during an annual fishing expedition in Yellowstone National Park. His wife Alma was with him at the time of death. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 p.m. at the Craig Mortuary with Rev. C. E. Brittain officiating and burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He was born January 30, 1891 in Oniana Nebraska, moved to Sidney in 1945 as a sales representative for the Omaha World-Herald. Survivors include his wife Alma, one daughter Mrs. Gladys Brush of Crawford Nebraska, a son Harley Averill of Phoenix Arizona, four grandchildren, sister Mrs. Edith Ethel of Kuna Idaho, and brother Guy Averill of Alexandria Nebraska. One son Howard preceded him in death April 23, 1950.
Two Sidneymen, Robert Tolles and Robert R. Wolf, were fined $10 and costs after pleading guilty before Justice Frank Sibal in Ogallala to a game law violation for fishing with more than two lines, as charged by a game conservationist.
Nebraska oil production stays steady at 54,754 barrels in a week while Pure Oil Co cuts its crude price by ten cents per barrel to 2.98 for 40 gravity crude. The Arapahoe Pipeline operator also buys a large share of western Nebraska and northeastern Colorado crude and notified mineral rights holders of the cut. Other companies have not yet announced follow on actions.

Deputy Sheriff Gene Morris investigated a theft at Potter Farmers Grain Elevator where tools valued at 132 dollars disappeared Sunday night. The tools owned by C&F Construction Co of Scottsbluff were used for a new storage tank at the Petter elevator and were taken after entry was gained through an open building door.

Police Court Tuesday morning before Police Magistrate Bart Taylor saw several cases. Clarence Alesis was fined $9 for illegal signs and parking near his service station. Neal L. Hansen of Sidney was guilty of leaving the scene of an accident and fined $10 plus $4 costs. Gerald L. Metcalf faced drunkenness and resisting an officer with $10 on first offense, $5 on second and $4 costs. Danny Markel of Kearney was fined $11 and $4 costs for overcrowding the front seat.

The Sidney Fire Department broke its no fire record yesterday afternoon after an alarm at 1102 Std Ave exposed a small shed blaze quickly extinguished with no damage. It ends nearly three months without a call, the longest period since 1955. Fire Chief Harvey Vizina notes the prior fire was at the Jacobson place south of Sidney, a grass fire extinguished by local trucks.
An early morning crash at the 13th street Burlington crossing sent Helen Pruett 18 Sidney to the hospital with a cut knee. Driver Robert L. Bauer 18 Route 2 Sidney admitted turning left onto the tracks in error. Police charged Bauer with reckless driving after finding the car considerably damaged.
