Spanish fleet defeated at Santiago and Cervera captured

News accounts report a major sea engagement near Santiago where Spain lost six ships, 300 sailors killed or wounded, 1,900 captured, and Admiral Cervera captured with other officers. Marblehead Will Enter Guantanamo Harbor First in Flight

A Civil War era style letter from Norman Moukat aboard the U S Ship Marblehead at Guantanamo Cuba dated June 16 1898 describes a harbor entry and bombardment of forts and water batteries. He reports 5 marines killed 6 wounded on Monday a fierce battle and Spanish losses of 110. The Marblehead Texas and Suwanee bombarded the forts and water batteries and the Texas fired 12 inch shells into the city. The ship captured Spanish soldiers Cuban officers joined the force and the crew celebrated with music and jokes about a pig named Blanco aboard.

Summer School Gleanings From the Fourth Observance

After the Fourth of July observance, Summer School members returned to work. Miss Fannie Waltman rejoined after illness, Miss Downey started a Dist. 28 term Friday and joined Tuesday, and Mr. Lawrence enjoyed Pine Bluff and returned Wednesday. VerValin convalescent, Muler improving, Prof. Siders led instructive talks, botany to study plants next week, and Mr. Chambers started a new algebra class.

Sidney Cornet Band Dissolves at Regular Meeting

At a July 6 1998 meeting in the Court House the Sidney Cornet Band adopted resolutions thanking Sidney citizens for support and donations and dissolving the band. The band’s effects were ordered placed in the custody of Mr C M Wright. Signed by the Sidney Cornet Band.
