Independence Day Notes From Sidney A Pleasant Celebration

The Sidney Fourth of July celebration proceeded without incidents as hundreds from nearby areas attended. The day featured a morning street band parade to the Tobin Opera House, sports events won by A J Guernsey and others, a ball game between Sidney Juniors and Badgers ending 8 to 8, a fireworks display with novelties, plus a crowd-pleasing dance and concerts by the Sidney orchestra.

Killing at Bridgeport Ties Marshal to Death Blow

Dallas C. Anderson died in Bridgeport after a beating by Town Marshal Ed Pritchett at Hodge Sanders' saloon on Monday night. A coroner's jury blamed a skull fracture from the assault, while many bridgeport residents back the marshal.

Saloon Closures Debated at Board Meeting

The Board of Trustees heard a petition from the W C T U urging Sunday saloon closures. The marshal was ordered to notify saloonmen to close from midnight Saturday to five AM Monday. A.B. Johnson attended Sidney July 4th celebrations and recalled marching into Vicksburg 43 years ago after a twenty nine day siege.

Republican County Convention Drafted for July 21 in Sidney

The Republican county convention will meet in Sidney on July 21 to nominate a county attorney and commissioner and to select delegates to state congressional senatorial and representative conventions. The call urges precinct caucus attendance and argues for strong candidates and a large, enthusiastic delegation.

Schley Daniels Nuptials in Sidney Ceremony

Edith T. Daniela of Denver and Chalmer Schley of Colorado Springs married at a Sidney Lutheran church last Saturday at noon. They traveled from Denver with twelve relatives on a Burlington special train, then proceeded by carriage to the church. Daniela, formerly married to William C. Daniels of Daniels & Fincher Denver, could not remarry in Colorado for a year, prompting the trip. Schley, son of New York banker Grant B. Schley, is active in Colorado mining ventures. After the ceremony they returned to Denver to reside.

Railroad Notes Highlight Local Railmen and Visitors

F E Winkelman left for Fremont to join his wife and children visiting there and return home in a week or ten days. Round House Foreman Worman and wife went to Terre Haute to visit friends for two weeks over the Fourth. Engineer Hi Smith and Fireman Tom Gatherless arrived from North Platte to help celebrate Independence Day and Tom demonstrated an automatic cannon, drawing crowds. Cliff DeMott, former UP engineer, visited town with his family en route to North Platte for the Fourth. he now ranches near Scottsbluff and owns valuable land on the ditch, noting UP engines have grown since he left the road.
