Delegations arrive by Union Pacific excursion, with 8000 seating capacity prepared in Kennard and Simpson grove. President T. H. Hutler speaks on national independence amid patriotic displays, flags, and water barrels for attendees as celebrations proceed with amid lively oratory and ceremony.
Thousands gathered for a city parade and afternoon program featuring a long line of delegations, bands, speeches by Judge Carrigan and Benj. T Butler, and a display of games such as sack races and greased pig. Evening festivities included a ball at Lockwood House, fireworks, and a large brass band concert. The day also noted local mining progress at Lead City with the Davenport and Black Hills Milling Company ready to crush ore and a balloon sighting over Sidney.
Gold prospecting declines in the Black Hills as placer mining loses favor and hydraulic methods loom for next season. Ida Gray District prepares for business. Lead City eyes home justice of the peace amid municipal talks. Garden City and New Chicago consolidate in False Bottom valley. Sweeney’s smelter arrives in Galena and will start soon. Sheldon Mumford begin saw-mill work. Qoscoola Improvement Co plans mill and sampling works by July 16 with James Cree as manager and 200000 feet of logs on hand. Collins and Senicur move ore from Yellow Jacket No.2 by pack animal.
