Wheat harvesters across the region report the winter crop surviving drought and hail. Harvest is 10 to 15 days ahead and set to spread this weekend as grain elevators fill. Lodgepole’s Farmers Elevator received harvest grain dumped into railroad cars, with car supply seen as a limiting factor.
Voting began Tuesday on the beef referendum with only seven cattlemen casting ballots by mid morning as harvest delays and mail voting options affect turnout. Producers have until July 15 to vote with 155 registered, and reports note good harvest quality and yields up to 60 bushels per acre, though storage space and possible wheat on the ground remain concerns.
Ella Studnicka was placed on probation by the Sidney Board of Education after a June hearing citing poor classroom management and instability. The board froze her salary at the 1976-77 level and approved new hires including varsity football coach Robert Fuller and wrestling coach Jerry Langdon, plus a new high school principal Gerald Van Buskirk.
Lorenzo Co-op votes 35 to 9 to purchase the former Lorenzo Grain Co elevator from the Peavy Co. The tentative price is 225000 dollars. The Kearney office handles the sale. Peavy owned the elevator less than six months after leasing it.
President Carter urged the Postal Service to create a citizen rate for first class mail to shield individuals from a forthcoming rise, while businesses would face higher charges. The plan, sent to Postmaster General Bailor, comes as the Board of Governors weighs savings measures including possible Saturday mail eliminations and a rate rise likely next year. Bailor noted wage and inflation costs driving the need, with a public poll showing broad support for cutting Saturday deliveries to avoid higher rates.
Inside Five girls will compete for queen and princess of the Cheyenne County Fair. Also noted are a Sidney youth killed in a traffic mishap near Sterling, Kimball winning the Gering Fourth of July Tournament 2-1 over Sidney, Little League tournament pairings, Chamber of Commerce impressions, and Gurley alumni reunion.
The Western Heritage development offers a public inspection weekend. Maxine Whitaker notes the far south end unit on 11th Avenue will be shown Saturday 10 am to noon and 2 to 4 pm, Sunday 1 to 4 pm, with furnishings by Fisher Draperies and Hardy Clark Furniture. Applications for housing will be taken adjacent, 26 received so far. The 40 unit complex aims for tenants by early August.
